2019, A Future Imagined

2019
The short film “2019, A Future Imagined” shows Syd Mead reflecting upon the nature of creativity and how it drives the future. Syd Mead is famous for his conceptual design work in feature films like Blade Runner, Aliens, Tron, Star Trek I, 2010, Mission to Mars, and many more. He is without doubt one of the most influential industrial artists of modern cinema history.

While this short film is but a drop in the ocean compared to the “VISUAL FUTURIST” documentary, it really captures the very essence of the creative state of mind that is Syd Mead.

Blade Runner has played an important role in the 20th century, representing the pinnacle of science fiction cinema. And as Syd states, it will be of equal value in the 21th century, as the movie touches on important human values and core feelings about what constitutes humanity.

I like Syd’s general optimism for the future. He has confidence in mankind’s ability to properly process knowledge and apply new technologies. To quote Syd; “I’m optimistic about the future, because we have more people working with problems today than ever before.“. His optimism is in strong contrast to Blade Runner’s general vision of the future, but I think that further strengthens his conceptual designs to become more apt to non-technological challenges.

This short film was directed by Joaquin Montalvan and was shot in 1080p (Full HD) by producer and photographer Jim Hunter.

It’s available on DVD through the Tribeca Film Institute’s ReFrame Collection.

The trailer has also been put on YouTube:

Disc Three:

1982 Theatrical Version
This is the version that introduced U.S. movie-going audiences to a revolutionary film with a new and excitingly provocative vision of the near-future. It contains Deckard/Harrison Ford’s character narration and has Deckard and Rachel’s (Sean Young) “happy ending” escape scene.

1982 International Version
Also used on U.S. home video, laserdisc and cable releases up to 1992. This version is not rated, and contains some extended action scenes in contrast to the Theatrical Version.

1992 Director’s Cut
The Director’s Cut omits Deckard’s voiceover narration and removes the “happy ending” finale. It adds the famously-controversial “unicorn” sequence, a vision that Deckard has which suggests that he, too, may be a replicant.

Recently a possible teaser for the upcoming “Final Cut” of Blade Runner was released on YouTube, however it’s now been removed. I do not wish to provide any links to unauthorized material (if that’s the reason it was removed from YouTube), however it’s still possible to find it online, e.g. try to google this article’s title…

Re-shoots for the upcoming BR SE DVD

The second half of this year will see the release of the, “Blade Runner” Box Set. The set will not only include never before seen footage. It will also contain newly shot scenes for the 25-year-old movie. Many consider “Blade Runner” to be Ridley Scott’s best work.

Joanna Cassidy, who played the Replicant Zhora in the movie, has stated that she has been part of newly shot scenes. According to her official website, she has been a part of the reshooting of many of her original scenes, and at least one new scene.

Special 25th-anniversary DVD edition of Blade Runner

multidiscFinally! This is the news we’ve long been waiting for; the BR:SE DVD (as it has been referred to by the fans). Reuters reported on May 30th that “Blade Runner,” one of the first movies to appear on DVD in 1997, is being restored and remastered for a brief reissue in September. The DVD, featuring the 1992 “director’s cut,” will be deleted after four months, and replaced by a 25th anniversary “final cut,” which Warner Home Video is billing as Scott’s “definitive new version” of the film.

Reuters also write: After a limited theatrical release, the newly spruced-up “Runner” will be released in a multidisc special edition DVD that also will include the original theatrical cut, the expanded international theatrical cut and the 1992 director’s cut. More specifics about the DVDs are to be released by Warner later on.

The director’s cut first came out on DVD before optimal formatting standards had been established, said Doug Pratt, editor of the DVD-LaserDisc Newsletter. “Shortly afterwards, it went into moratorium. The early adopters who bought the title have long since wished to see it upgraded, while other fans, who came into DVDs later on, have been unable to find it at all. It is the only ‘big’ sci-fi spectacle currently unavailable on DVD,” Pratt said.

BRI’s comment: This will be a monumental product release longly awaited in suspense by the Blade Runner community. I couldn’t agree more on the statement by Mr. Pratt in the paragraph above. To further illustrate the grand anticipation by the community for this release make sure you read BRmovie.com’s excellent tracking of everything that has been uttered and speculated upon during the last five years.
